Description:
The 2019 Speri Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Sant'Urbano is a red wine from the Valpolicella region in Veneto, Italy. Produced by the historic Speri family, this Amarone is crafted from a meticulous selection of Corvina Veronese and Corvinone (75%), Rondinella (20%), and Molinara (5%). The grapes undergo the traditional appassimento process, drying for around 100 days to concentrate their flavors before fermentation.
Tasting Notes
- Aroma: An intense bouquet of dried violets, black cherries, fresh coffee grounds, cocoa powder, and subtle spices.
- Palate: Full-bodied yet refined, with silky textures and layers of polished red berry fruit. Balanced acidity and structured tannins create a long, persistent finish with hints of dark chocolate, spice, and earthy minerality.
- Structure: Well-integrated tannins and fresh acidity provide excellent aging potential.
Critical Acclaim
- Vinous: 96 points – Praised for its balance and aging potential, described as an Amarone to "bury deep" in the cellar for future enjoyment.
- Decanter: 95 points – Recognized for its elegant structure and rich dark plum and black cherry flavors, with excellent freshness and a long, spice-infused finish.
Serving and Pairing
This Amarone is best served at 18–20°C (64–68°F). Decanting for at least an hour before serving enhances its aromatic complexity. It pairs beautifully with braised meats, game dishes, and aged cheeses, complementing its richness and depth.
Aging Potential
The 2019 vintage exhibits exceptional structure and balance, making it suitable for long-term aging. While it is already impressive in its youth, cellaring for at least 10–20 years will allow its complexity to evolve further.
