Duckhorn Vineyards, founded in 1976 by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn, has become a benchmark for premium Merlot in Napa Valley. Known for its dedication to quality and consistency, Duckhorn helped establish Merlot as one of the region’s most distinguished varietals, crafting wines that beautifully balance richness and elegance.
Wine Description
The 2020 Duckhorn Napa Valley Merlot is a blend of 80% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. It boasts a deep ruby colour and offers vibrant aromas of red currant, ripe plum, black raspberry, and cherry, layered with sweet baking spices, tea leaves, and cocoa. On the palate, the wine is rich and luxurious, featuring silky tannins and flavours of ripe red berries, pie crust, and fig compote. The bright, elegant finish reflects its aging for 15 months in 100% French oak (40% new, 60% neutral). This Merlot is approachable now but will continue to develop complexity over the next 5 to 7 years.
Food Pairing
